Isn't that pretty much what we do here daily on both sides because we believe partisanship is at the root of most problems?

because we believe partisanship is at the root of most problems?
I don't think that's why people do it, but it is the final outcome.

Just a guess but people can get caught up in the political rhetoric they hear from the media and members of their party, both being sources that tend to focus an the dramatic. If you are inundated every day with cries that "those other people are ruing the country with their ignorance" (because they have different opinions and values) people become polarized, angry, and contentious.

Because it's a way of attacking the root of the argument. A poison tree bears bitter fruit. If you can successfully paint your opponent as a person of bad will, then that invalidates anything they say.

Sounds pretty reasonable to me. As I have written to Macduff and others, my opponent is not the enemy. He is merely my opponent.
