Tacos, Tacos, Tacos: great latino outreach!

    Latino outreach, the GOP way:

So, let's say you're the mayor of East Haven, Connecticut, a Republican, in a presidential election year where the Latino vote will be critical for the GOP Prez candidate to win the election. You've been in that office for 14 years, save two, from 2007-2009. You just won the last election with a bare 34 votes. Your name is Joseph Maturo.

The police officers in your town are alleged to have harassed, abused and brought false charges against Latino residents for quite a while now. Four of those officers have been ARRESTED by the FBI just hours ago and are now awaiting hearing/trial on charges of racial profiling. In fact, one officer allegedly said he “likes” harassing people who “have drifted into this county on rafts made of chicken wings.”

A latino reporter named Mario Diaz interviews you about the problem and asks you "what are you going to do for the Latino community?"

And you say: "I might have tacos when I go home, I'm not quite sure"

No shit: that is exactly what this bigoted douchebag did, and it is all on video.

You can watch the entire video exchange here at TPM. The "taco" comment comes about 9 seconds into the video. You can see that the mayor of East Haven is being more than just sarcastic. It is pretty sad. There are more comments, more ranting and raving. Go watch it. It gets worse from minute to minute. The journalist calls him on the carpet for the comment.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

It goes without saying that the GOP has a latino problem. I don't think this incident helps any.

Here, Republicans, I think you need this:

Said Mayor has apologized profusely for his “insensitive and stupid answer.”

What is it with mayors and insensitive, stupid answers these days??

The Governor of CT, Dan Malloy, ripped the mayor a new one:

    From the CT Post:

"Gov.Daniel P. Malloy issued a scathing statement Wednesday morning ripping East Haven Mayor Joseph Maturo for telling a TV reporter Tuesday afternoon that his plan to reach out to the Latino community in the wake of a racial profiling scandal in the town's police department was to go home and eat a taco.

"The comments by East Haven Mayor Joseph Maturo are repugnant," Malloy said. "They represent either a horrible lack of judgment or worse, an underlying insensitivity to our Latino community that is unacceptable. Being tired is no excuse. He owes an apology to the community, and more importantly, he needs to show what he's going to do to repair the damage he's done. And he needs to do it today."

Maturo's comments came just hours after four East Haven police officers were arrested by the FBI on charges of civil rights violations and obstruction of justice. WPIX11˛s
Mario Diaz asked Mayor Joseph Maturo, "What are you doing for the Latino community today?"

The mayor, a Republican who defeated Democrat incumbent April Capone by a slim 34 vote margin in November, replied, "I might have tacos when I go home, I'm not quite sure yet."

Diaz said the mayor apologized for his comments and said it was "out of context."

During the interview, Maturo also said he didn't "get (Diaz's) point" when the reporter stated there is only one Spanish-speaking officer in the 50-member department in a community with a large Latino population.
Wednesday morning, speaking on WPLR-FM's Chaz and AJ morning show, Maturo said "It was stupid, it was insensitive and I gave my detractors... a reason to make matters worse with a `gotcha' and an insensitive and stupid answer to something I should have never said."...

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

Uh, I watched the video. His comments are not out of context. What is this about Republicans always lying about the "out of context" thing? Do they think that people don't know how to watch a video, or what?

This is not the first time that elected GOP officials have said truly disparaging comments about the hispanic (Latino) community. Go back and look at Tom Tancredo's moments in history.

Obama won 67% of the Latino vote in 2008. I bet he hits 80% this time around. I could swear that the GOP is going out it's way to try and deliberately lose in 2012. Really. This is truly some craaaaazy shit!

Republicans are in trouble if they can't court the Latino vote. That party has become so violently xenophobic, that I won't be surprised if Obama takes over 70% of their vote this time around

I think they will do better and better. Latinos are into religion, family values, hard work, etc... these are things that the Democratic Party not only rejects, but often makes fun of.

If by family values you mean discrimination and suppression of the freedom of expression, then yes, Democrats do reject such.

If by religion, you mean the union of church and state, and injecting elements of theocracy into our secular government, then yes, Democrats do reject such.

If by hard work, you mean pushing the tax burden to the middle and lower classes, and holding exorbitant tax breaks for the wealthiest and heavy subsidies to corporations, then yes, Democrats to reject such.

However, the largest of the Latino subgroups immigrating here are Mesoamerican. That means origins from Mexico, Nicaragua, Guatemala, etc, in that region. All the Republican talk of border walls, mass deportations, anchor babies, and some even talking of them like they are sub-human, it's been noticed, and it's not appreciated.

A new front runner for Dumbfuck Of The Year, and it's not a Republican Presidential Candidate!
