Back to the topic of the OP. There were a couple of links in the opening post and just want to make sure no one missed the one with the full interview.
Let Them Eat Tacos: Mayor’s Regrettable Response To Alleged Police Abuse Of Latinos | TPMMuckraker
By the end of the interview was laughing out loud while also in a double face palm of sympathy for the guy. Personally didn't see anything overtly racist. Think he was initially just trying to stand up for his police officers until the facts came out. And then he got irritated and was trying to get sassy with the press. Total failure. But the Mayor's Northeast accent combined with a slight speach impediment made it a YouTube hall of fame candidate.

First, it would not be racism. It would be bigotry.
And if you do not see the connection between him being asked what he would do for the latino community (obviously, very, very obviously referring to the police razzia that just happened) and him responding that he would go home and maybe eat tacos, and if you do not see how unbelievably bigoted and demeaning this is to a community that is already angry and hurting.... well, then, I think this can help you some.
You know, there are times when people do stuff that is so mind-bogglingly stupid, that it is really not worth your time to try to defend it, really. And I think that this is one of those times. And if the mayor cannot control himself then surely he needs a different job, btw. The voters don't pay him to be snarky and sassy. Also, read the allegations against the cops - this is SERIOUS stuff, not just against one cop, but against four. And the probability that they will end up being found guilty is EXTREMELY high, for the FBI is not inclined to pounce unless it is sure it has an absolutely airtight case.

I don't see associating Latinos with tacos as being bigoted, any more than associating Americans with apple pie or Italians with pizza or the Japanese with sushi, Jews with Matzah, etc etc etc. It was insensitive to their "needs", sure, but I wouldn't go so far as to say bigoted.

lol, my perfectionist streak. First I wanted to make the 'edit' red, then I added the second sentence, then I think I changed some wording, then I realized I forgot to add my name and it looked like an edit you made, which was just confusing. My head is not quite right yet tonight.
Anyway, I don't think it's the same thing...but I suppose it could depend on how loosely one defines "bigoted". I don't include that to mean referring to associating a traditional dish to the people who originated/popularized it. Is saying "I'm going out for MEXICAN food" bigoted? Would that include tacos?
EDIT: GODDAMMIT I DID IT AGAIN! at least I caught myself and didn't lose anything this time.
I'm AFK now, until I get my shit together.
