ZAGREB (Reuters) - A Croatian man has offered to sell his kidney and cornea in an attempt to pay back loans worth 35,000 euros, a local newspaper reported Thursday.

"I know that selling organs is illegal, and I know that by losing a cornea I will go blind in one eye, but I am ready for it," 40-year-old Nenad Vrbanic told daily newspaper Vjesnik.

"I see no other way out. By selling these organs I will help myself and someone else," said Vrbanic, who has sold his car and house in a Zagreb suburb. He now lives with his mother in a rural area in the north.

Croatia has had a steady credit boom for private consumers in the last few years and observers have recently pointed to a growing number of citizens who declare insolvency.

I know this is the same concept as the original post but does anyone feel a little different about this instance since the seller sees this as his only way out of a problem that his entire country is suffering? I HOnestly believe hat if this man werent in such debt, he wouldnt even consider the thought.

Here's something ironic. It *IS* illegal. What difference does having it legal or illegal do here? The man is desparate to the point that he would break the law to pay his debt. You are implying that he's being "forced" to do this, and by no means am I hearing this, and if it was being forced, by no means do I support it.

It does strike a curious chord. Why would he feel so hard-pressed to pay back a debt that he would consider such a drastic measure? Honestly I look at this as an "option" and not a forced-issue. Options you choose, you do not get "forced" into. If this guy signed a contract on his organs, then this absolutely brings up a reason why it SHOULD be legal, and REGULATED (see below).

It does bring up a good point. If it were to be allowed, then there *MUST* be regulations that would prevent issues that would "corner" a person into using organs as collateral. By no means should a contract require that a debt be "insured" with organ sales, if debt cannot be paid off.

I am *ALL FOR* that. Understand, I do not believe in "FORCING* somebody to give up an organ. I am for the *OPTION* with fully educating the person, as well as a full mental evaluation that must be approved before being allowed to donate (Like it is required NOW for being a live-donor). Please note, on the "black market" it skips these safety precautions, and is much more dangerous than making it legal......

Maybe I am misunderstood. I know that noone is actually "forcing" him to sell anything and I knew before posting this that it wouldnt change your mind in whether or not it should be legal to sell organs. I simply wondered what your thoughts were on this certain situation being that this man is doing so in order to make ends meet b/c he simply has no other means as compared to the original post where the seller was doing so simply as a means for "extra" income to buy a few luxuries.

Maybe some sort of counseling should be required prior to going through to make sure that the seller is truly ready to go through with the procedure.

This brings up a very valid point what is mental stability? This world is filled with quite a few different kinds of people and I wouldn't for a second consider that anyone was less than me for being a Christian or any other thought they might have. Going back to Christianity, Ok Christians beleive wholely that we all sprung from some invisible man and when he finished up he took a little rest and has been resting ever since. Not only this though they gave the invisible entity the ability to see all hear all and do quite a few incredible things. Frankly this sounds incredibly insane to me. With all other possibilities in mind I look at this as having a chance of happening, but not a good one at all .00000000000000000000000000001% or less.
I keep my mind open to all possibilites but not everyone does. Here is another theory that will sound insane to you i'm sure. Our solar system is incredibly atom like with many planets swirling around one central star that radiates energy. So technically we could just be one atom like structure in a much larger entity that could be anything......a creature, a table, or even one atom of our own bodies that infinatly get's bigger and bigger without fail. The universe is an enigmatic thing especially for our narrow capacitied minds that can barely percieve anything happening around us. For example: Moving a pencil from your desk to the floor. Well the floor is actually just energy and so is the pencil and all matter for that fact (as proved by Einstein) it's vibration is just very slow, but accelerate it and release the energy and you get to see quite a show of radiation and all other kinds of forces being released (heat is a form of radiation). I leave my point though you could spend your entire life explaining every force acting on the pencil as it is moved from the table to the floor. You would have to include the pencil bending space and time around its self (gravity my friends it's what it does. Anything with mass effects the fabric of the universe.).
So how is that for insane my friends it would definatly be incredibly difficult to guage the entire intelligence and perception of the world by one person. I hope that this didn't confuse the hell out of most of you but I couldn't leave Lemons comment go as just a smart ass remark (sorry lemon I saw the meaning, but perhaps not everyone did). Sorry for going so off topic.

Ok. At this time i really dont have an opinion on this matter. I am doing a research paper that explains the controversy on if people should be able to buy or sell their organs. I was wondering if anyone would be able to give me their opinion on the topic stating if you oppose or support it. If you could, please e-mail me at danieltahrens@yahoo.com. i am only a senior in high school and would like to know some opinions from real people and not rely totally on the internet. Thank You.

Man To Sell Kidney to Buy a House

Well, i personally believe that the man should be able to sell his kidney to buy himself a house. But the only problem i am having right now is what his current living condition is like, and y he would go to such great extents to get himself a new house. I mean if he wants to sell his kidney, go for it. Its his body, his organs, he should be able to do so, even if it wasnt to buy a house, he should still be able to sell his kidney for monetary purposes. i just got done researching and writing a fairly long paper for my class. Included in that paper is what the law says and what i believe it should say. I am one man speaking my opinion, but i know that there are many people around the world that believe in the same thing i do, the legalizaion of the buying/selling of human organs over a market. Yes there is great concern with the infectious organs, and how they obtain the organs if they are not ones own, but that is what the government is there for, to watch over the people. I mean people are supposed to make decisions for themselves, but instead the government is denying the people to natural rights. the government does not have any say over one self or his/her organs. The government should at least allow people to buy or sell their organs over a market with stipulations like going to processes to make sure the organs are healthy, blood type, put a price ceiling and a price floor that way everyone lower/middle/upper classes can buy them... also that way there isnt any preferential treatment towards anyone.

I say let him do it. Let's consider this - the crisis of morals that we have is when people donate organs in order to survive, or buy food. This guy's looking to sell his in order to get an apartment in Vienna. It's obvious he can survive. And it's not like we can be choosy about who's organs we have. If his kidneys are healthy, all power to him.

    Yea, I'm with ya

With the way Bushco is shutting down the middle class here, I wonder what a good used sphincter muscle would go for... ~Inky
