Boehner: U.S. Will Not Default on Debt, But Congress Will Slash Spending

The United States will not default on its obligations, but must reduce spending at the same time it raises its debt limit, House Speaker John Boehner said Sunday.

Suggesting that lawmakers are willing to uncouple the debt ceiling from the spending debate so that the U.S. doesn't default on its loans, Boehner said the Republican-led House will demand that an increase in the debt limit is met with changes to the budget process so that Washington's spending spree "never happens again."

"If the president is going to ask us to increase the debt limit, then he's going to have to be willing to cut up the credit cards," he said. "I think our team has been listening to the American people. They want to us reduce spending, and there is no limit to the amount of spending we're willing to cut."

Time to wait and see some more.

Time to wait and see if Obama's budget will realistically reduce spending.

Time to wait and see if the Congressional Democrats...especially in the Senate...will seriously address this issue.

I think Pres Obama's budget is coming out on Feb 14th. Do you know if the Republicans are planning to put forth their own budget plan?

I don't thenk the Democrats have much choice....not that the entire future depends on them We already saw what happened when the Repbulicans first bill went against everything the campaigned on......and they got shamed.

I know you and I will never agree on this, JoJo.....but cutting spending without increased taxes isn't going to solve the problem.

The answer to your question is in the article. I'm about to go to bed, so I'll help you out:

Meanwhile, President Obama is expected to release his fiscal year 2012 budget proposal on Feb. 14, the same week Republicans plan to bring up for a House vote a budget proposal for the rest of the current fiscal year.

In that budget, Republicans won't insist on across-the-board cuts, Boehner said, but the House Appropriations Committee will target reductions at big-ticket items like eliminating remaining stimulus spending, ending the bank bailout, getting the federal government out of mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and repealing the health insurance law signed by President Obama last year.
    Talk later.

At least across the board cuts are out of the picture.
Remaining stimulus.......cutting their own throats, but I can go for it.
Ending the bank bailouts........thought most of them were done, and we made money on the interest?
Repealing healthcare........it didn't make the vote....I wish them luck.

Government spending is what has saved our economy so naturally the GOP wants to put & end to it. (GOP attitude= "What's the good of spending if it doesn't swell the coffers of Exxon-Mobil or Haliburton?"....& "A good economy & prosperous America will help Obama in 2012..... We want to keep the country in ruins so that the public is desperate & dumb enough to give us back the car keys!" <evil laugh>

Chest beating and demands to "cut spending" make for great political slogans and soundbites. But when it comes time to list specifics, our congresspricks are suddenly a little less forth coming. Should be an interesting next few weeks.

Nothing partisan here. Expect we will hear a good amount of double talk and wild ass projections from both parties....

Government spending MIGHT have saved us, but it's not helping us anymore.
