Iran starts nuclear reactor, says intent peaceful

Trucks rumbled into Iran's first reactor Saturday to begin loading tons of uranium fuel in a long-delayed startup touted by officials as both a symbol of the country's peaceful intentions to produce nuclear energy as well as a triumph over Western pressure to rein in its nuclear ambitions.

The Russian-built Bushehr nuclear power plant will be internationally supervised, including a pledge by Russia to safeguard it against materials being diverted for any possible use in creating nuclear weapons. Iran's agreement to allow the oversight was a rare compromise by the Islamic state over its atomic program.

Western powers have cautiously accepted the deal as a way to keep spent nuclear fuel from crossing over to any military use. They say it illustrates their primary struggle: to block Iran's drive to create material that could be used for nuclear weapons and not its pursuit of peaceful nuclear power.

I don't have a problem with Iran operating nuclear reactors. I don't trust them when they say they don't want nuclear weapons. I think the world will/should keep a very close eye on these guys.

Well, if Russia is legitimate in keeping this system going where they receive all the spent fuel cells, this may go over fairly well. I have no issue with Iran having power, I just don't want a nuke in the hands of that crazy fuck Ahmanutjob. However, it would take awhile to produce a nuclear weapon, and I don't think Russia would be all that happy about them building one either.

Patience. Give Iran time. I didn't say it could happen next year.

Any country that has nukes has no right to criticize or oppose another country obtaining them.

    Two questions:

Do you support the US nuclear energy program, and/or the growth of it?

If Iran pursues nuclear weapons, do you support a Russian invasion of Iran? And assuming you do not, or Russia would not even consider such a move, what do you think can seriously dissuade Iran from pursuing weapons?

I have no problem with American nuclear power. The waste is manageable and it will help keep the lights on at least in any transition period away from petrochemicals. Green Parties differ slightly from state to state, and not all members agree with 100% of the platform. The national platform is simply a consensus over generally what most state platforms support. The reason I joined is because I agree with a larger percentage of the Green Party platform, than any other party of any relevance.
