The Democrats would love to do that. This article is dated 2/8/11.

Senate Democrats suggested to House Republican leaders on Tuesday that cutting subsidies to oil companies could save $20 billion over 10 years and provide a way to reduce spending and the deficit. "This is just one example of a wasteful item in the budget that could be cut in order to make a down payment toward reducing nation’s deficit," the senators wrote. "If the House chooses to adopt this suggestion, it would represent a good first step towards cutting spending in a bipartisan way.”
The letter was addressed to Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), Budget Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), Appropriations Chairman Hal Rogers (R-Ky.) and Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp (R-Mich.).

Hopefully, this idea will be enacted.

I'll believe it when it comes to fruition, which probablly won't. Boener is putting out a good soundbite,so the American people will maybe move towards the GOP and their agenda, but, sorry, isn't going to work. He will not push this because then there goes the big contributions to the GOP. The big oil isn't going to stand by and let this happen, but we'll see.
