Thread: Holy Shit !! Nuke subs go down

This absolutlely floors me. Two nuclear submarines, one French the Other British colide and sink. Up to 16 trident missles along with nuclear reactors on the ocean floor.

Im guessing war games or maybe the old " crazy Ivan " may have caused this. Any Navy vets in here ?

The article plainly states that neither sub sank. Still, scary stuff.

The American Department of Defense regularly "looses" nuclear missiles, by comparison. They always turn up later, but they are frequently "lost". How do you lose a nuclear weapon? It's not exactly like it's a set of car keys.

I was speaking of the potential of such a collision as was the article. Still, I dont think a collision is the same as losing radio contact. If we " lose " a submarine and then it's publicly anounced that there was a collision and we still cant find it then thats a problem.

No by "lost" I mean they literally misplace the weapon, it's not a matter of losing contact.

Like I said, it's not like they're a set of car keys, you would think that nobody would "accidentally" load nuclear tipped cruise missiles, or a shipment of ballistic missile fuses, on to a plane without the pilot's knowledge.

Well, thats the end of two officers careers. At least there was no real damage.

Nobody sank. It was just a little 500 million dollar bump in the night.

Those subs are sooo quiet and undetectable,,,,,,,,,, so this was bound to happen.

The sensationalist reporting on this has really been bugging me. All sorts of people being quoted as saying how close we came to disaster - but mostly politicians and campaigners, none of whom I'd expect to have an intimate knowledge of trident submarine design. You'd assume some care is taken to ensure nukes don't explode every time the sub bashes into something.
