    2) No.

If this is some sort of argument that it's all to introduce GM, I have two simple responses (ignoring the question of what's 'evil' about GM foods).

Firstly, the EU has consistently placed barriers in the way of GM. It's only in the last few years that they've started to remove restrictive legislation preventing the production of GM crops in Europe.

Secondly, did you pay attention at all to the story? This thread is about how the regulations are being removed. They're not going to be there any longer. We can buy wonky food now. And it was the current Commission that repealed the legislation. Remember this when considering their motives.

    Yes GM seeds.

I am just taking a shot here, but I see the lifting the ban as a reaction to a strained food supply.

Listen here in the land of the free, they are talking about things like hot dog stands, if you sell dogs, then you MUST sell something healthy. It is pretty damn bad when the government tells you what you can or can not sell. This is tantamount to the fairness doctrine of food.

Bad?? How is it bad? Honestly Michael, when you buy an hotdog, do you take a sample of it, send it to a lab and wait for the analysis to eat your hotdog? It's completely normal that, as it's impossible for you the consumer to check what the sausage is made of, that the hotdog sellers are forced to sell only "healthy" sausages. It's good for them too: if I couldn't be sure the hotdogs weren't made of dog or cat meat, with 30% of chemical wastes and other disgusting things (I know, I'm exagerating a bit but you get the point), I would NOT buy them. Such regulations are a win-win situation: the consumer knows what he buys (a libertarian should like that, and that's the ONLY way to know what you're buying, unless you're carrying around an analysis kit) and the seller will sell more as his products are more trusted.
