    Shooting the Koran. So What?

    Marine Shoots Book
BAGHDAD - An American soldier used a Quran, the Islamic holy book, for target practice in a predominantly Sunni area west of Baghdad, prompting an apology from the U.S. military, a spokesman said Sunday.

Separately, mortar shells slammed into a residential area north of the Iraqi capital, killing at least four people and wounding 30, most children playing outside, officials said Sunday.

The shelling occurred as clashes broke out in Shiite areas late Saturday despite a truce reached last week by Shiite politicians and followers of anti-U.S. cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

Iraqi police found the bullet-riddled Quran with graffiti inside the cover on a small-arms range near a police station in Radwaniyah, a former insurgent stronghold west of Baghdad, U.S. military spokesman Col. Bill Buckner said in an e-mailed response to a query.

American commanders then launched an inquiry that led to disciplinary action against the soldier, who has been removed from Iraq, Buckner said.

The shooting, which occurred May 9 and was discovered two days later, threatened to further strain relations between the Americans and Sunni allies who have joined forces with them against al-Qaida in Iraq in Radwaniyah and other areas.

The Association of Muslim Scholars, a Sunni group, condemned the shooting of the Quran, calling it "a hideous act against the book of almighty God and the constitution of the nation and the source of its glory and dignity."

The incident was first reported by CNN, which broadcast a ceremony at which the top American commander in Baghdad apologized to tribal leaders in Radwaniyah. The military confirmed the details in an e-mailed response to a query.

"I come before you here seeking your forgiveness," Maj. Gen. Jeffery Hammond was quoted as saying. "In the most humble manner I look in your eyes today and I say please forgive me and my soldiers."
So what! Historically the damn muslims have kidnapped Christians and made them descrate their own religious icons or murdered them if they refused. That stupid book the Muslim worship has been the cause of half the evil that area of the world has suffered in the last 1300 years, the stupid book the Christians covet being the source of the other half.

US Generals shouldn't crawl before these pestilential superstitious animals. The Bible says eye-for-an-eye, tooth-for-a-tooth, so all we had to do was give the Muslims a Bible to pee on.

I don't fully agree with you, but I don't see that we need to be apologizing and kissing their ass over there. We have soldiers being killed over there every day and I don't here any apologies coming our way. Shit happens in war and it happens both ways.

This is what pisses me off:

"I come before you here seeking your forgiveness,” General Hammond said at the meeting, in remarks carried by CNN. β€œIn the most humble manner, I look in your eyes today and I say, please forgive me and my soldiers.”

It pisses me off because it tells me we are not in any position to negotiate anything so we sure as hell are not in a position of strength over there. We have 2 wars going on and no one has a clue as to what our mission is for either and what the end game is supposed to be. Yet others want another war and criticize those of us who want to get us back into a position of strength. Bushwads stay home, don't vote and for heavens sake stay out of the debate, you've fucked things up enough.

Whether one actually agrees or disagrees doesn't matter. The net result is increasingly strained relations which is not at all good for soldiers in that region.

What a stupid thing to do, though unfortunately understandable considering the mental duress the soldiers are under in this catastrophic war.

Can't wait for this sort of deranged individual to come back and walk our streets...

The good note of this - the guy was well trained. I don't know how far away he was but that's a small target.

None of the Americans liberating France got there and started pissing on Fench flags. My gandpas didn't free Sicily and Holland and then start raping nuns and burning mounds of clogs. What the fuck?

I know reporters went and covered battles even in the 1700's. I've heard battle-viewing was a hobby in the US civil war. It's not like Vietnam was really the first war people know the truth about. My grandma saw bodies wash up on shore in WW1 (102 this summer God bless her).

When exactly did we start recruiting retards to do our soldiering?

People like you should prefer that, since it might lead to more US soldiers coming home in a box, just in time for November.
