My grandfather, U.S. Army Col. Edwin Joseph McAllister, was born in Battle
Creek in 1895. He does not know that his first grandchild is an international
expert on depleted uranium. I have worked in two U.S. nuclear weapons
laboratories, and in 1991 I became a whistleblower at the Livermore lab.
Depleted uranium is very, very, very nasty stuff:
Depleted uranium (DU) weaponry meets the definition of weapon of mass
destruction in two out of three categories under U.S. Federal Code Title 50
Chapter 40 Section 2302.
DU weaponry violates all international treaties and agreements, Hague and
Geneva war conventions, the 1925 Geneva gas protocol, U.S. laws and U.S.
military law. Since 1991, the U.S. has released the radioactive atomicity equivalent of at
least 400,000 Nagasaki bombs into the global atmosphere. That is 10 times the
amount released during atmospheric testing which was the equivalent of 40,000
Hiroshima bombs. The U.S. has permanently contaminated the global atmosphere
with radioactive pollution having a half-life of 2.5 billion years.

DU is causing severe health issues where ever it is used. Iraq, Bosnia.
How many American servicemen are screwed up with this stuff?

White Phosphorus is also a WMD, and it was used in the Falluja offensive....at first they lied and said they used it ONLY for "illumination", then they "retracted" the lie and admitted it had been used as an incendiary weapon.

White Phosphorus is a chemical weapon, it's a banned chemical weapon under Protocol III of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons....of course the United States REFUSED to sign Protocol III.

Do not be so disturbed. This is not a nuclear bomb. The article almost implies that it is because the talk about the release of radioactive material in TESTING. This material is a metal. It is used because it is an extrememly dense metal. Because it is so dense it has armor piercing capability. This is why it is used. It is a low level radioactive material. It is also used as armor in tanks because it is so dense. But the applications are not only military. The metal is used as balast in counter weights and as keels for sailboats. Why there is even an application of this metal in false teeth!!

Stop trying to scare people!

I don't think the military would use it if it was that dangerous. They're not stupid. They wouldn't poison themselves and the people they're trying to save.

Its an interestng topic. i am willing to suggest that there ay be different grades of DU- with differing toxicity levels. In addition, the dentistry application, phased out in the 1980's, is about 500 ppm or 0.05%, whereas the shell would use 100% DU, I would think.
Residual civilian use seems to be monitored, and there seems to be a standard on the permitted radioactive release:
"less than 0.01 millisievert/year (mSv/yr) (1 millirem(mrem)/year) and therefore, the Facility meets the criteria in Subpart E of 10 CFR Part 20 for unrestricted release and for license termination."

Not sure how this compares to DU shells...

Found this if anyone is interested....

I dn't think they are trying to save the drivers of foreign tanks... I think they weighed it up and decided it was better to run the risk of pollution than have an enemy tank remain operative...

I meant trying to save the general population. They didn't need DU to win. They could have won using sherman tanks. The iraqis were pathetic in head to head battle. Much better in insurgent warfare, mind you...
