MELBOURNE - The site of the latest deadly shooting spree in the nation's heartland might be 1,500 miles away, but Wednesday's shopping mall massacre in Omaha affected Donald Carey deeply.
Before moving to Melbourne to become police chief in 2003, Carey headed the Omaha Police Department and started training programs to deal with shooting situations such as the one that left nine dead in the Midwest city.
"I really feel for the people in that community," said Carey, who still has friends there. "Omaha is the heart of America. It's a relatively low-crime area."
