Some people can't seem to understand why the Cheney Crew would allow 9/11 to happen and take steps to make sure that it happened in the manner they desired. Every peace activist (and many others, even Alan Greenspan) knows the three letter answer, but the truth runs deeper than simply trillions of dollars of profits of from oil. What is at stake in WWIV, i.e. the oil war, is truly the future of civilization itself, and that is no exaggeration.
Unless you believe in the scientifically scorned notion of abiotic oil (the idea that oil is not from long compressed organic remains), then the debate about Peak Oil is not if but when. Some believe world oil production will not peak until 2030 or later. Others believe that it already has. We won't know for sure until several years after it has happened. But what is Peak Oil, and what does it mean for us in practical terms?
Peak Oil doesn't mean running out of oil, it means the point at which we reach the maximum possible rate of oil extraction. After Peak Oil, we will have continuously less oil to use. And since all of the alternative energy sources in the world, including nuclear, will never add up to the energy output of oil, Peak Oil also means Peak Energy Production. Furthermore, since economic expansion is predicated upon the expansion of energy production, life after Peak Oil will be a life of irreversible economic recession ending in something that makes the Great Depression look like a happy times.
Cheney&Co. are well aware of this grim reality, and do not like how it squares with their plans for a new century of American global dominance. With Peak Oil rapidly approaching, the last major reserves in the Middle East don't just represent a fiscal bonanza, they represent the only chance to maintain America's primacy throughout the 21st century. All they needed was a pretext to justify seizing it. And that's what they got.
