Anyone here afraid of the Census?

I don't get it? I have heard many people talk about the census like it is this Orwellian death squad breaking down our doors and seeing how many spawn we have hatched.

Can somebody explain it to me!

Big brother. All you need to know; and all the right and paranoid know.

There should be censuses every 5 years, or more often, actually.

That really is true, isn't it? :hsughno:

I don't like the census thing though. It feels intrusive.

When conducting research we have accessed census data in order to formulate policies. Its not really about big brother. Its just useful for intelligent planning decisions.

people who circumvent the collection of this kind of data have no right to whine about what their government does or doesn't do, any more than those who choose not to vote.

If people want to live in a society, accurate completion of census forms and voting is not really much to ask.

What I find ironic and delightful though...if the really paranoid don't participate, they'll be undercounted, which means that policies will not favor them as much as they might and their level of representation will be reduced.

Most of those who oppose the census want to significantly reduce the size and scope of government. Thing is--actually acting on those convictions won't reduce the size or scope of government. It will just reduce whatever benefits they might receive from it. Which, of course, will only increase their distrust of government...

Not only that, but it is mandated in the Constitution. Many of these people who fear it are also the ones who say we need to follow a strict interpretation of it. Go figure.

It is a bit intrusive, but it's really necessary for good government policies of all kinds.

Then they probably go on to complain about their roads not getting paved if they live way out in the boonies. Well if you'd shown the gov't that someone actually lived where you do, maybe they would have re-paved your road. Idiots.
