Addicted First Nation struggles with housing

Addicted First Nation struggles with housing - Thunder Bay - CBC News

A whole Oxycontin pill is worth about $400 in this community, which numbers about 1,200 people. It's estimated about 80 per cent of the adult population here is hooked on prescription pain killers.

My goodness, who are the Dr.s responsible for this? Or did they just get them off the streets?

I've known several people who got addicted to Oxycontin & oxycodone or whatever brand name they want to call it. It's very physically addictive stuff similar to heroin. Even after the injury or sickness that caused their pain is healed they still need it. Going cold turkey will make them physically ill. Once they go on the stuff they're hooked and they keep needing more and more because their body develops a tolerance.

The doctors that prescribe this stuff for anything but the most severe pain relief are no different than street pushers in my opinion.

It takes a lot to get hooked on these. I know years ago after my three back surgeries I was put on them and took myself off. But now I was in a lot of pain. Nerve pain is the worst. I actually hate taking meds and this stuff makes you or me not even want to eat. Everything taste bad. Dr.s can tell by blood work if a person is overtaking these. Taking them without severe pain or not being monitored by a Dr. yea I can see a person getting hooked, but not me. I hear some crush them and snort them. Meds are there for a reason and if you need them they should be there.

Wow - ONE pill is worth $400. That's incredible.

Addiction is a very sad story. Destroys lives.

I'm not sure where you live, but where I live they go for around twenty bucks a piece depending on the strength (5 mg, 10mg, 20 mg)

People also melt it and inject it intravenously or smoke it. Drug dealers put it in both powder and crack cocaine to make it more addictive.

Sure coke is very addictive as it is, especially when it is smoked or shot up, but not in the same way as opiates like Oxycontin which get you physically ill when you don't get your fix.
